How SMART Marketers Grow Their Business

At the end of the day, there are only 3 ways to grow a business. Just ask any SMART marketer, and they will tell you the same.

I first heard Jay Abraham (who happens to be one of the smartest marketers to ever live) talk about this back in 2011… It seemed simple enough, so I decided to put it to the test in my own business.

Over the next 5 months I scaled my business to over a million dollars in sales …If there ever was a “secret” to growing a wildly profitable business, then THIS IS IT!

And in this blog post, I’m going to break it all down and show you exactly how you can do the exact same in your business. (If that’s your thing… which I’m assuming it is, since you are here)

Anyway…

Most people, including me, think that increasing business is a complex giant burden of thousands of possible tactics that one can try …

…But this ‘secret’ takes the complex and makes it simple.

So instead of worrying about the thousands of different possibilities …take a minute to “zoom out” and look at the big picture of your business… Look at what you CURRENTLY have in place and compare it to what you WANT to have in place in the future (…do this for different aspects of your business and it will become very clear as to where you should be focusing your time. )

A couple examples…

  • What products do you currently have vs what products do you want to have?
  • What are your current price points vs what price points do you want to have?
  • Where do you currently spend your time vs where do you want to spend your time?

You get the idea…

When you do that, you will see that there really is only the need to focus only on THREE business building categories…

And 3 seems WAY more “do-able” than thousands, right?

OK, let’s dive in…

So what are the 3 ways to grow a business? 

  1. Increase the number of clients, get more new prospects into paying customers
  2. Increase the average transaction, get each client to buy more at each purchase
  3. Increase the frequency that the average client buys from you, get each customer to buy from you more often

Just thinking of all your marketing and business activities as

falling in one of these three categories will help keep you focused and will quickly give you a boost in revenues and profits.

Personally, I look at each of these 3 categories as my “3 key areas of focus” to grow my business. I know that doing so allows me to constantly bring in MORE customers, that are willing to pay me MORE money, on a MORE frequent basis.Smarketing

  • It’s worked for me time and time again…
  • It’s worked for thousands of people who came before me…
  • And it will work for YOU too, as long as you apply it!

Let’s look at an example…

1000 customers x $100 per transaction x 2 transactions per year = $200,000

So what would happen if all we did was increase each of those 3 areas by 10%…

1100 customers x $110 per transaction x 2.2 transactions per year = $266,200

Did you catch that?

I’ll point it out just in case you missed it.

Most people who first hear this get the math wrong… They automatically think that by increasing each of the 3 key areas by 10%, they will increase their total business by 10% also…

But that’s actually not true… It’s much better than that.

When you increase all of the “3 key areas of focus” you end up getting a compounding effect. Jay Abraham says by simply increasing each of these 3 areas by 10%, you’ll grow your total revenue by over 31%. This is a tremendous boost in income for not much work, so I don’t care what else you have going on right now… This strategy is one worth learning right now.

A 25% increase in each area would DOUBLE your business. I’ve always liked this idea since it gives you a concrete idea of what to do to grow your business rapidly.

Pretty cool, right?

Now let’s  go a bit deeper into each of these three areas, so you can get a better understanding of how this specifically applies to your business.

Get More New Prospects Into Paying Customers

Without a steady flow of new customers coming in, you’re dead in the water. Every entrepreneur knows that. So it’s not unusual that this is almost always the “go-to” option that people focus on when they want to make more money…

The problem is that it’s the most difficult of the three ways to grow a business. It also happens to be the most expensive of the three options. But none the less, it’s important.

Bottom line is, you need a system of some sort that automatically grows your audience every single day… Because the moment you stop bringing new people into your world, is the moment your income will take a down hill turn.

Get Each Client To Buy More At Each Purchase

It’s a known fact that we as humans prefer buy from people we know, like, and trust if at all possible… People that we have a genuine connection with.

The more we know, like, and trust someone …the deeper our relationship with someone …The more likely we are to open up our wallets and spend more money.

So as SMART marketers, we understand that we should always be striving to deepen the relationship we have with our prospects and customers.

We should always be looking at our business and asking these types of questions:

  • What can I do to increase the engagement level of my audience?
  • How can I deepen the existing relationship I have with my audience?
  • How does my audience view our relationship?

This one was difficult for me…

When first starting out, I found it pretty easy to build up a nice sized email list of people in a short period of time… Unfortunately, that’s not always the best approach. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I couldn’t pay the bills with a list of email addresses…

I knew that if I truly wanted to build a long term business, I needed to learn how to build a list the RIGHT way, and figure out how to develop REAL relationships with my potential prospects and customers.

Get Each Customer To Buy More Often

If not, make it a point to figure it out…

…Because once you know that number, you can focus on making it go up.

And the more often your customers buy from you, the more money you will make. Combine that with the increased transaction amount talked about in the last section, and your income will go up even that much more.

Anytime I want to really bring in some income fast, I have a “go-to” advertising strategy that allows me to do that without risking a lot of my hard earned money upfront.

But not only will this marketing strategy increase the frequency in which customers buy, but it will also increase the average transaction amount in most businesses. (without doing ANY extra work)

    Nailed it once again Justin. It always cracks me up as we always seem to be looking for the complicated in order to grow our business. But as you’ve laid out here, it always goes back to a few core actions and steps.

    Also one of the major A-ha moments for me was this concept of making the growth of your audience automated daily. Time is always of the essence…so automation let’s us set it and forget it in a way. Of course, we should constantly strive to interact with our new audience members. But having that growth system in place is such a game changer.

    so much value here even the second time around… I read this again and I saw a different angle for me this time… In seeing this different angle tells me that the first time I read this things were sinking in I didn’t even know… Now reading this again things got clearer. I’ll tell you what I mean.

    I realize now reading over the three top things to keep your business operating at top speed and performance. one should take one concept out of the three and master that one thing and get it going really well. Then once that is going well take the next one and master that with focus. so, I’m taking ( focus on building an audience so I can do # 1 (keeping audience engaged) focus on that and master it and move on to the next. Thanks again for great value. You know when it is valuable when you get more nuggets out of it the second go round…
